《Duncan the Doughnut Wants a Job》

邓肯的暑假一开始就糟透了。

Duncan's summer started awful.

他走进车库拿自行车，却发现妹妹借走车子时撞了东西——自行车现在坏了。

He walked into the garage to get his bike. His sister had borrowed his bike and hit something with it. Now his bike was broken.

邓肯跑去跟妈妈说："我需要一轮新的自行车，我的坏了。"

Duncan ran into his mum and said, "I need a new bike. Mine's broken."

妈妈回答："那你就得打工赚钱啦。"

His mum said, "You will need to do some jobs then."

第二天早晨邓肯暗自琢磨："我能做什么呢？"

The next morning, Duncan thought to himself, "What could I do?"

他想到了很多主意：

He had lots of ideas.

当消防员甜甜圈？

Fireman doughnut.

Later that day, Duncan strolled up to his mum and said, "Mum, I need you to take me to the police station. I want to become a policeman."

His mum took a step back and said, "I'm sorry, Duncan, doughnuts are a policeman's favourite food, I've heard. It just wouldn't be safe."

Duncan was starting to think, "How will I ever find a job?"

He leaned over the fence and spoke to his neighbor, who said he was a lifeguard when he was younger.

"好主意！"邓肯说道。

"Great idea!" Duncan said.

晚饭后，邓肯告诉爸爸："明天我要去游泳池当救生员。"

After dinner, Duncan said to his dad, "Tomorrow I want to go down to the swimming pool and be a lifeguard."

爸爸露出惊恐的表情，说道："我很抱歉，儿子，水和甜甜圈可不搭配。你会变得黏糊糊的，所有东西都会粘在你身上。"

His dad looked terrified, then said, "I'm sorry son, doughnuts and water do not go together. You would turn into a sticky mess, and everything would stick to you."

邓肯打开存钱罐数钱。存款不多，他也不擅长数数，但他还是努力清点着。

Duncan opened his money jar and counted it. He didn't have much and he wasn't a very good counter, but he gave it a try.

爸爸妈妈看见后，有了一个主意。

His mum and dad saw, and had an idea.

次日清晨，妈妈叫住邓肯："能帮我晾衣服吗？外面的天气又晒又热......"

The next morning, Duncan's mum called him and said, "Can you help me hang out the laundry? It's as hot as the sun out here..."

邓肯帮忙晾完衣服，两人很快就离开艳阳底下，躲回了阴凉处。

Duncan helped, and the pair were quickly back out of the blazing sun.

下午，爸爸在修理堵塞的水槽，水槽被各种东西塞住了。爸爸喊邓肯过来，帮忙把很多的工具递给他。

In the afternoon, Duncan's dad was fixing the sink, and somehow it was clogged with all kinds of things. He called Duncan and asked him to pass him lots of things.

没多久，他们就完工了。邓肯又晃到了别的地方去。

Soon enough they were done. Duncan wandered off.

晚些时候，邓肯回来时，爸爸和妈妈正在打扫车库。

Later that day, Duncan's mum and dad were cleaning the garage when Duncan walked in.

爸爸问邓肯："可以拜托你帮忙扫地吗？"

His dad asked him, "Can you sweep the floor please?"

邓超爱扫地，他喜欢想象自己正在掀起一场大大的沙尘暴。

Duncan loved sweeping. He liked to imagine a big dust storm.

Duncan had an idea at dinner for a job he could do.

In no time at all, the boot was empty.

As Duncan lay on the living room floor missing his bike, thinking 'I will never get a job...' his mum and dad called him out to the car.

His dad opened the boot and in there was a new red bike for Duncan.

邓肯说："你们不是说我要打工赚钱吗？"

Duncan said, "I thought you said I needed a job."

妈妈笑著说："傻甜甜圈！我只是说你需要去干点活呀！"

Duncan's mum laughed and said, "Silly doughnut! I said you need to do some jobs!"

这个暑假剩下的日子里，邓肯骑着自行车逛遍了整座小镇。

And Duncan rode his bike all around town for the rest of the summer.
